Nidderdale's
Hidden Gem
This
18th century traditional Dales inn is situated in the village
of Dacre, once the site of a Fountains Abbey grange and later
owned by the Ingilby family. When the railway was operating,
passengers alighted at Dacre station for Brimham Rocks and no
doubt took refreshment at the inn.
Nowadays, the food and ambience of the Royal Oak still please travellers,
be they holidaymakers, tourers or walkers. And, of course, it remains
a popular venue for local folk too. The pub has a cosy bar, open fires,
low timbered beams and a lounge area affording splendid views of lower
Nidderdale.
One
of its many interesting features are the numerous quotations
and old sayings about food and drink that are painted on the
beams and oak panelling. There is a separate 40-seat dining
room with a woodburning fire.
During recent renovations a piece of Nidderdale history was discovered
in this Dales Inn, a hundred miles from the nearest coast. A small plaque
was found on the rear of the main door, stating that it was :- made by
The Hughes Blockow Shipbreaking Company, Blyth, Northumberland, from
Teak taken from RMS Armdale Castle.
At the rear of the Inn there is a large attractive
garden with lovely views. Or sit on the sunny cobbled area and
watch a game of Petanque (or boules). The Inn has its own piste
- sets of boules may be borrowed.
The
Royal Oak is a genuine Free House, without any form of brewery
tie,
serving cask conditioned beers such as Daleside, Black Sheep,
Tetley and Timothy Taylor's. It is featured in "The 2002 Good Beer Guide ", "The
2002 Good Pub Guide" , "AA Best Inns and Pubs 2002", "The
Hidden Places of England" and "Historic Inns of England"
