Pateley Bridge Town Council
The Town Council dates back to 1894 when a Local Government Act established parish councils. Elections for High and Low Bishopside Parish Council were first held on Saturday, December 15 th 1894 and the first meeting of the Council took place on December 31 st 1894. The Minutes Books covering every meeting since then may be viewed at NYCC Archives, Northallerton. At that time not less four meetings a year were held, one of which was the annual meeting open to the public. At the present time, meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. All parishioners are entitled to sit in at all meetings of the Town Council, and are given an opportunity of asking questions towards the end of each meeting. The second meeting of the month deals primarily with planning matters.
The Annual Assembly is held on the third Tuesday in April. It is specifically intended as an opportunity for parishioners to hear what the Council has accomplished over the previous year, and also to provide a chance for everyone to come along and air their views - whether they are comments, suggestions or indeed criticisms.
When town status was granted in 1986 the council was renamed Pateley Bridge Town Council and the chairman also became mayor. The council has eleven members who are elected every four years.
